The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a warning to the public about the circulation of fraudulent messages aimed at deceiving candidates registered for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a statement released on Wednesday, JAMB spokesperson Dr. Fabian Benjamin disclosed that suspected fraudsters are behind the scheme, which involves the creation of a fake messaging code designed to mimic the Board’s official communications.
According to Benjamin, the scammers combined a numerical code, “8863,” with JAMB’s legitimate USSD code “55019” to form a deceptive sort code. This fake code is then used to send misleading messages to candidates, falsely claiming that irregularities have been detected in their registration details.
“These messages are designed to alarm candidates and trick them into contacting certain individuals who falsely promise to help resolve non-existent issues,” Benjamin explained.
He emphasized that the messages are not from JAMB and that security agencies have been alerted to track down those responsible.
Benjamin urged candidates and the general public to ignore such messages, noting that scams of this nature are common during examination periods, as fraudsters attempt to exploit anxious candidates.
“We advise everyone to remain vigilant. Any message that does not come through JAMB’s official communication channels or contains suspicious content should be considered fraudulent,” he added.
JAMB reiterated its commitment to safeguarding candidates and ensuring the integrity of the examination process.
