JUST IN: Gov Diri Quits PDP After Decades in Party

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, who rose through the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to become governor, has resigned his membership of the party.

Diri, a staunch PDP member for over two decades, began his political journey as a commissioner under the administration of former Governor Goodluck Jonathan.

He later served as Principal Secretary to ex-Governor Seriake Dickson, who went on to hand over power to him.

In 2015, Diri was elected to the House of Representatives under the PDP platform and became Senator for Bayelsa Central in 2019. He assumed office as governor in 2020 following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified the earlier election result, and was re-elected in 2023, both on the PDP ticket.

Earlier on Wednesday, Diri and former President Goodluck Jonathan attended the commissioning of the Best Western Plus Hotel in Yenagoa.

However, hours later, reports emerged that the governor had quit the PDP. His spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the development in a post on his verified Facebook page, without giving details on the reasons for the resignation.

Alabrah did not state whether the governor would be joining another party, though there are speculations that he might move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

OUR CORRESPONDENT gathered that Governor Diri is currently meeting with members of the State Executive Council and the PDP State Working Committee to formally inform them of his decision. The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, is said to be in attendance.

It was also learnt that all PDP members in the State House of Assembly and commissioners in the State Executive Council have resigned their membership of the party.
