Pope Francis was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025, after struggling with bronchitis for several days.
On Tuesday, February 18, his condition worsened, and doctors diagnosed him with bilateral pneumonia. Despite medical efforts, the Holy Father passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 21, at 7:35 a.m.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the Pope’s death from the Casa Santa Marta with these words:
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father, Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was devoted to serving the Lord and His Church. He taught us to live the Gospel values with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
In April 2024, Pope Francis had approved a revised edition of the liturgical book governing papal funeral rites.
This new edition will guide the funeral Mass, details of which are expected to be announced soon.
