Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has accused the state Commissioner of Police of partisanship following the police command’s withdrawal from the Independence Day anniversary parade in Kano.
Speaking during the event on Wednesday, Governor Yusuf described the commissioner’s action as an affront to the people of Kano and a blow to the spirit of national unity.
He said the decision of the commissioner and his personnel to pull out of the parade was a deliberate move that embarrassed the state on a historic occasion.
“As you can see, on this historic Independence anniversary of Nigeria, he decided to pull out of the parade along with his own personnel. This is for reasons known to him and his allies. On behalf of the government and people of Kano State, we are not happy with this attitude,” Yusuf said.
The governor stressed that Kano remained peaceful and that residents had eagerly anticipated the celebration of Nigeria’s independence.
“Today, every Nigerian is happy to celebrate the independence of this country. The people of Kano are peace-loving, and they have been looking forward to this day to gather together to mark our freedom,” he added.
Governor Yusuf insisted that the police commissioner’s action was politically motivated and ran contrary to the constitution.
“And by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, nobody can undermine this celebration. On behalf of myself, as the Chief Security Officer of Kano State, and on behalf of all the people of Kano, we condemn this unethical and partisan attitude,” he declared.
He further described the commissioner’s conduct as “unethical,” “unprofessional,” and “disloyal” to the Nigerian state, noting that such actions eroded public trust in security institutions.
While thanking other security agencies for participating in the parade, the governor assured of his government’s continued support to sustain peace, unity, and progress in Kano and the country at large.
