DELTA: Two factory workers narrowly escaped death on Saturday after getting trapped inside a diesel reservoir while carrying out repair work at a company in the Ikosi area of Lagos.
Officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the state fire service rescued the victims, who reportedly fell into the reservoir and nearly suffocated.
According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the incident occurred around 10 am on Saturday.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the victims accidentally fell into the diesel reservoir while working. The second victim also fell into the reservoir in an attempt to rescue his colleague,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire Service and LASAMBUS, were swiftly deployed to the scene to save the victims.
“First aid, including CPR, was administered on both individuals immediately after their rescue. They were then transported to the hospital for further medical attention,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
The LASEMA boss assured that the incident scene had been secured and is currently being assessed to prevent a recurrence.
“We are taking necessary steps to ensure safety protocols are followed to avoid similar accidents in the future,” he said.
Residents and factory workers in the Ikosi area expressed concerns about the safety measures in place at industrial facilities, calling for stricter enforcement of health and safety regulations.
One eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said, “If not for the quick response of LASEMA and the fire service, the situation could have been fatal. Companies need to do more to ensure workers’ safety.”
