Marketers Seek Clarification on Dangote Refinery’s Direct Supply Plan

The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) says it will engage Dangote Petroleum Refinery and regulators to understand the refinery’s plan to begin direct fuel distribution to filling stations nationwide.

Speaking during a webinar on Thursday, MEMAN Executive Secretary Clement Isong said the group is assessing the initiative’s implications and will hold discussions with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and other stakeholders.

“We’re trying to understand exactly what this initiative entails before drawing conclusions or taking a position,” Isong said. “Questions around pricing and equalisation still need clarity.”

He welcomed Dangote’s plan to use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for distribution, noting that while the infrastructure is limited, it aligns with government policy and represents an opportunity for innovation.

Addressing concerns about potential market dominance, Isong urged regulators to strike a balance between innovation and competition. “We’ve always advocated for deregulation and open market competition,” he said.

Dangote Refinery announced on Sunday that it will begin direct fuel distribution on August 15, using 4,000 new CNG-powered trucks.
