Military Confirms Detained Officers Plotted Coup, Set for Court Martial

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The Nigerian military has confirmed that some officers currently detained at the headquarters of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) were involved in an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

The Armed Forces High Command also confirmed that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

The Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, disclosed this in a telephone interview, noting that the report had been submitted to what he described as the “appropriate superior authority.”

In a statement issued afterwards, Uba said officers found to have a case to answer would be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and other relevant service regulations.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations,” the statement read.

He explained that the comprehensive investigation, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.

“The findings have identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN,” Uba said.

“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.”

The senior officer said the decision to make the development public was to ensure transparency and accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process.

He stressed that the Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority.

Uba added, “The AFN reiterates that measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.”
