Eight furniture shop owners opposite the Federal Government College, Warri. on Sunday,March30th, lost properties worth millions of naira following an inferno allegedly triggered by welding activities at a nearby canteen.
According to eye witnesses, the blaze started few minutes past 9:00 am, when spark from a burglary proof being installed at the front of the canteen by a welder, ignited inflammable items such as gas cooker, gallon of fuel and deep freezer.
But for the quick response by the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Comrade Agbateyiniro Weyinmi Isaac, who called officials of the Delta State Fire Service,the inferno would have spread to other structures.
One of the victims who spoke to newsmen said his industrial machine worth five hundred and fifty thousand naira,sets of chairs and other valuables, were completely destroyed by the fire.
The account was not different from his fellow furniture makers, who received the distress calls.
