Despite a brief misunderstanding that stirred tension within the Akwa Ibom State camp, the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) has continued to progress steadily, with competitions in full swing across venues in Uyo.
The incident, which occurred on Day 2 of the festival, was traced to a miscommunication over camping allowances involving athletes and state officials. Multiple athletes who spoke anonymously confirmed that the matter was swiftly resolved after clarification from the state sports authority.
“It was all a case of wrong information,” one of the athletes said. “There was no intention to disrupt the games. We’ve moved past it and are now focused on winning for our state.”
The misunderstanding followed a colourful and well-attended opening ceremony on April 1, which officially ushered in the second edition of the regional sports fiesta. Since then, sporting activities in football, athletics, swimming, volleyball, wrestling and more have taken centre stage, drawing enthusiastic spectators and showcasing emerging talents from across the nine Niger Delta states.
Festival organisers have assured that the games remain peaceful and on schedule. “What happened was minor and has been handled. The athletes are now fully concentrated on their competitions,” a local official said.
With medals up for grabs and state pride on the line, attention has returned to the field of play as the festival builds momentum into its final days.
