DELTA: The Northern Youth Assembly and the Inter-Tribe Community Support Forum have condemned the spread of misinformation linking the tragic Uromi killings in Edo State to the recent death of an Igbo man in Kano, warning that false narratives could fuel unnecessary panic and ethnic tensions.

At a press conference in Kano, Coordinator of the Inter-Tribe Community Support Forum, Nworisa Michael, expressed sorrow over the murder of 16 Kano indigenes in Uromi and extended condolences to their families. He commended Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his prompt intervention in maintaining peace and preventing retaliatory violence.

However, Michael dismissed claims that the death of Peter Chukwudi Nwanosike, a native of Abagana, Anambra State, was linked to the Uromi incident. According to him, Nwanosike was not killed in a reprisal attack but fell victim to phone snatchers, locally known as ‘yan kwacen waya,’ on March 30, 2025.

“Contrary to widespread speculation, Mr. Nwanosike was not targeted in revenge for the Uromi killings. He was chased by criminals attempting to steal his phone. While fleeing, he collapsed and later died—he was not stabbed as some reports falsely claimed,” Michael clarified.

The groups cautioned against the dangers of fake news, urging media outlets and the public to verify information before dissemination to avoid inflaming tensions. They also commended HRH Fred Edozele Akhigbe (JP), the Enogie II Sarkin Edo in Kano, for his swift condemnation of mob violence in Edo State.

Furthermore, they praised Governor Yusuf for setting up a high-powered committee to investigate the Uromi killings. The groups also acknowledged Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s visit to Kano, describing it as a crucial step toward fostering unity and ensuring justice for the victims.

“We urge all authorities to take decisive action to prevent further violence and protect all citizens, regardless of their ethnic or regional backgrounds,” they stated.
