DELTA: Mob in Otor-Owhe, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, on Wednesday, set a man ablaze after he was accused of beheading a widow on her farm.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Oghenero, was alleged to have murdered a woman known as Oshomirara before fleeing with her severed head.
Eyewitnesses said Oghenero was seen returning from the bush with a polythene bag dripping with blood, but no one suspected foul play at first. However, when the victim’s headless body was later discovered, alarmed residents recalled seeing him and immediately mobilized to track him down.
Local youths and vigilantes stormed his residence, where they reportedly found the woman’s head.
“He was trying to escape when he was shot in both legs before the angry crowd set him on fire,” an eyewitness said.
The motive behind the brutal killing remains unclear, though some residents suspect it was for ritual purposes.
Confirming the incident, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, stated that the suspect had already been lynched by the time the police arrived.
“The suspect murdered the woman in the bush, severed her head, and took it to his house. When the headless body was discovered, community members traced him to his residence, found the victim’s head, and set him ablaze,” Edafe said.
The police spokesman urged residents to refrain from jungle justice and allow law enforcement agencies to handle criminal cases.
