NAPTIP Hails Life Jail Sentence for Teacher Who Raped 9-Year-Old Pupil in Abuja

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has hailed the life imprisonment handed down to a 19-year-old school teacher, Abdullahi Abbass, who was convicted of raping his 9-year-old pupil in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement signed on Saturday by NAPTIP’s National Press Officer, Mr. Vincent Adekoye, the agency described the judgment as another major breakthrough in the fight against sexual violence in Nigeria.

Abbass, who worked as a class teacher in one of the leading schools in Kwali, was found guilty of raping the young pupil through the anus after luring him away from home on March 19, 2025.

The court, presided over by Justice Osho Adebiyi of the FCT High Court, convicted the teacher on two counts of rape and sexual abuse, offences punishable under Section 2 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.

According to the report, after the incident, the convict threatened the victim to keep silent, but the child bravely informed his mother, leading to Abbass’s arrest by the police and subsequent transfer of the case to NAPTIP.

Delivering judgment on October 29, 2025, Justice Adebiyi sentenced Abbass to life imprisonment.

Reacting to the verdict, NAPTIP’s Director General, Mrs. Binta Bello, commended the judiciary for the landmark decision, describing it as a victory for justice and a deterrent to other potential offenders.

“This is a landmark judgment that carries the commensurable punishment for the offender. His name shall also feature prominently in our Sex Offenders Register,” Bello stated.

She noted that the speedy investigation, prosecution, and conviction reflected NAPTIP’s renewed commitment to fighting domestic violence, rape, and all forms of sexual abuse in the country.

Bello further lauded the Nigeria Police Force for its effective collaboration with NAPTIP, which she said was key to achieving justice in the case.
