The National Assembly and retired military generals have raised alarm over the resurgence of terrorism in the North-East, calling for immediate military re-armament. Lawmakers, reacting to a recent Boko Haram attack on Giwa Barracks, Borno State, lamented that insurgents are better equipped than the Nigerian military.
Despite increased defence budgets—rising to ₦4.91 trillion in 2025—troops are reportedly under-equipped. Retired generals urged the government to invest in modern warfare tools, including drones, AI surveillance, and encrypted communication systems. Lawmakers criticized the lack of oversight in military spending and stressed the need for accountability and decisive action.
In response, the Senate has approved a two-day national security summit to find sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s deepening security crisis. The House also resolved to investigate the Giwa armoury fire, bolster security in affected states, and assist victims’ families.
