The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has defended the recent tariff adjustments approved for mobile network operators, saying they are essential for improving service quality and ensuring the telecom industry’s sustainability.
Speaking in Abuja, NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Wada Maida, represented by Nnenna Ukoha, said the tariff review is helping operators recover from years of forex-induced losses, which had affected network performance.
“With the new tariffs, operators are regaining profitability and reinvesting in infrastructure, which will translate to improved service nationwide,” Maida said.
He noted that the Commission relies on rigorous, cost-based analysis before approving tariffs, ensuring that prices remain fair and economically justified.
Maida also addressed challenges facing the sector, including infrastructure vandalism, fibre cuts, and identity verification issues. He revealed ongoing collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Office of the Attorney General to prosecute vandals.
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and consumer protection, assuring the public of continued engagement and oversight.
“Telecom infrastructure is a national security asset. Any attempt to sabotage it will be met with the full force of the law,” Maida warned.
