RIVERS: The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has taken a bold step to rejuvenate sports in the region with the inauguration of the organizing committee for the maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival, scheduled to hold in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from April 1 to 5, 2025.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Hon. Alabo Boma Iyaye, charged committee members to ensure the festival is a resounding success. He highlighted the rich history of sports excellence in the Niger Delta and the need to harness young talents.

“You have been carefully selected because of your expertise in sports development and event planning. This festival is a game-changer, providing a platform to discover new talents and reignite the passion for sports in the region,” Iyaye stated.

Representing the nine sports commissioners from the NDDC’s mandate states, Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Daniel Igali, applauded the initiative, describing it as a first-of-its-kind regional sports festival in Nigeria.

“In the history of sports in this country, we have never had a regional festival like this. It will not only elevate sports to a new level but also engage our youth, keeping them away from crime and social vices,” Igali remarked.

The Niger Delta Sports Festival forms part of the NDDC’s 25th-anniversary celebrations, underscoring its commitment to youth development and regional integration through sports.
