DELTA: Delta North Senator and Acting Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Ned Nwoko, has pledged to prioritize the welfare of Nigerian footballers, both active and retired.

Nwoko made the promise on Friday during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) to his residence in Maitama, Abuja.

Led by PFAN President, Tijani Babangida, MON, the delegation sought the senator’s support in advancing key objectives, including improving the welfare of players and ensuring a robust support system for retired footballers.

In his remarks, Senator Nwoko expressed delight at hosting the PFAN executives, reiterating his commitment to sports development.

“I am passionate about the growth of sports, particularly football, which remains a unifying factor in Nigeria. The welfare of our players is paramount, and I will do everything within my capacity to support their well-being,” he said.

Nwoko also pledged to work closely with PFAN to achieve their objectives and expressed interest in partnering with the association through his Sports University in Idumuje-Ugboko, Delta State — the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“The Sports University aims to nurture young talents and provide educational opportunities for sports professionals. This partnership will help strengthen the structures needed to develop Nigerian footballers,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Tijani Babangida emphasized the need for collaboration to strengthen the football ecosystem.

“We need to build a thriving system that caters to the welfare of active and retired players. Partnering with Senator Nwoko and the Sports University will be a significant step in achieving this goal,” Babangida said.

Other PFAN officials present included Clement Temile (1st Vice President), Edema Fuludu, MON (General Secretary), Magaji Boss (North West Commissioner), Mustapha Mubdiyu (FCT Caretaker Chairman), and Mrs. Rotimi Michael (FCT Caretaker 1st Vice Chairperson).
