Nigeria has been thrown into national mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on Saturday afternoon, July 13, 2025, at the age of 81. He died at a private clinic in London, where he had reportedly been receiving medical attention away from the public spotlight.
The news of his demise was first disclosed by Bashir Ahmad, a former presidential aide, and later confirmed in an official statement signed by presidential spokesman Garba Shehu.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. The family of the former President has announced the passing on of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Shehu stated.
Buhari, a retired Major General and former military Head of State between 1983 and 1985, returned to power as a civilian president in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and served two terms until 2023. His presidency was defined by his anti-corruption drive, commitment to infrastructural development, and a divisive but determined war against Boko Haram and other insurgent threats.
Although he had receded from the public eye since leaving office, his influence on Nigerian politics remained significant. Buhari was seen by his supporters as a symbol of integrity and national discipline, while critics often accused his government of failing to unite the country and protect human rights.
Reactions have continued to pour in from Nigerians at home and abroad. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a brief condolence message, described Buhari as “a man of courage who sacrificed greatly for the unity and future of Nigeria.”
Similarly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said, “Former President Buhari’s legacy is one of discipline and resolve. While his policies sparked debates, his patriotism was never in doubt.”
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, under whom Buhari served with from 2015 to 2023, also offered condolences. “He was a firm leader, a patriot to the core. His efforts to stabilize Nigeria in difficult times must be remembered.”
The Federal Government is expected to announce national mourning protocols, funeral arrangements, and possible state honours in the coming hours.
Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, several children, grandchildren, and a nation that remains divided on his legacy but united in acknowledging his place in history.
