Nigeria Customs Intercepts Tramadol Valued at ₦8.6 Billion at Abuja International Airport

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted a substantial consignment of tramadol, with an estimated Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦8,654,800,000, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Announcing the seizure, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Olumide Adebisi, expressed deep concern over the persistent trafficking of illicit substances into the country, often concealed under the guise of legitimate commerce.

“It is most disheartening that certain unpatriotic individuals continue to undermine national security and public health in pursuit of illicit profit,” Adebisi stated. “These dangerous drugs frequently end up in the possession of criminal elements, including terrorists, kidnappers, and armed bandits, thereby exacerbating insecurity across the nation.”

Comptroller Adebisi reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to combating the smuggling of prohibited items, particularly within the Federal Capital Territory and its environs. He attributed the success of the operation to the leadership and strategic direction of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose administration has provided robust institutional support and operational resources to frontline commands.

In accordance with established inter-agency protocols, the seized consignment was formally handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at a brief ceremony held at the Abuja airport, attended by representatives from sister security agencies.

Receiving the consignment, NDLEA Commander CN Muhammad Jidda commended the diligence and professionalism of the Customs personnel, and assured the public of a thorough investigation to trace the origin and intended destination of the drugs. He further emphasized that all individuals found to be connected to the illicit shipment will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

This interception represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to stem the tide of illicit drug importation and safeguard the nation’s security and well-being.
