ABUJA –The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially appointed Opus Racing Promotions as Nigeria’s representative in a bold bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko made the announcement, revealing that invitations have been extended to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, legendary driver Lewis Hamilton, and top circuit designers Tilke Engineers & Architects to visit Nigeria for stakeholder engagements.

“Our goal is to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria not just as a sport, but as a driver of tourism, infrastructure, youth development, and economic growth,” Dikko said.

The bid is spearheaded by former Premier League footballer Marvin Sordell, who is leading a growing coalition of local and international supporters backing the ambitious project.
If successful, Nigeria would become the first African country to host an F1 race since South Africa in 1993—a milestone that would position Abuja as a new motorsport destination on the global map.
Further meetings and feasibility assessments are expected in the coming weeks as Nigeria positions itself to make racing history.
