Nigeria Police Resume Issuance of Tinted Glass Permits via Digital Platform

The Nigeria Police Force has resumed the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) nationwide through a secure online platform, as part of efforts to improve public safety and restore public confidence in law enforcement.

The move, directed by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., is aimed at creating a transparent and accountable system for regulating the use of factory-fitted tinted windows.

The new digital platform, accessible at possap.gov.ng, addresses growing public concerns over police harassment linked to tinted windows, as well as the rising number of vehicles manufactured with them. Authorities say criminals have exploited tinted glass to carry out activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and “one-chance” scams, as the dark windows limit visibility and hinder law enforcement operations.

According to the IGP, the reactivation of the permit system is designed to identify and authorize legitimate users — including individuals with medical conditions and members of the security sector — while curbing misuse by criminal elements.

Applicants are required to submit personal details, including their National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), through the online portal. The application process will also include biometric data capture and background checks. Approved applicants will receive a QR-coded digital permit within 72 hours.

To ease the transition, a 30-day grace period will begin on May 1, 2025, allowing vehicle owners time to obtain the necessary permits before enforcement commences. The police have warned that officers who extort or harass the public during this process will face disciplinary action.
