A tragic case of suspected domestic violence has rocked Minna, the Niger State capital, as a 31-year-old man, Mohammed Sani, is now in police custody for allegedly beating his heavily pregnant wife, Hauwa Isah, to death.

The incident occurred late on the night of June 3, 2025, at the couple’s residence in Banin Hashim Estate, Limawa ‘A’, Minna. Neighbours say the couple had a troubling history of domestic abuse, which may have escalated fatally this time.

According to the Niger State Police Command, a distress call was made around 10:30 pm, reporting that Hauwa, 24, was found unconscious and bleeding inside their home.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrest of the husband and the circumstances surrounding the case.

“Upon receiving the call, operatives from A Division Minna moved swiftly to the scene where they found the woman lying lifeless with bloodstains around her,” Abiodun said.

“She was rushed to the General Hospital in Minna, where she was confirmed dead. It was also confirmed that she was about nine months pregnant.”

SP Abiodun further stated that preliminary information from neighbours pointed to repeated incidents of physical abuse by the husband, raising strong suspicions about the cause of her death.

Mohammed Sani was immediately arrested, and the case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

Community members expressed outrage and sorrow over the incident, calling for justice and stronger protection for women facing domestic abuse.

“This is not the first time we’ve heard screams from that house,” said a neighbour who requested anonymity. “But we never imagined it would end like this with a young woman and her unborn child losing their lives.”

The incident has reignited calls for urgent action against domestic violence and better enforcement of protective laws for women across Nigeria.
