Nnamdi Kanu Abandons Defence, Argues ‘No Valid Charge’ Against Him

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Monday informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that he has abandoned his plan to call witnesses and proceed with his defence in his ongoing trial on seven counts of terrorism.

Kanu told the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, that after reviewing his case file, he concluded that no valid charge exists against him, and the prosecution had fundamentally failed to establish any case. Consequently, he argued there was no necessity to proceed with presenting a defence.

Justice Omotosho directed Kanu to formally file a written address stating his position and to ensure the prosecution is duly served. The judge also advised the IPOB leader to consult with experts in criminal law to fully understand the legal implications of his decision.

The case has been adjourned to November 4, 5, and 6 for the adoption of final written addresses. The court will consider the final addresses either on the basis of Kanu’s argument that no case has been established against him, or for him to proceed with his defence should he decide otherwise before the adjourned dates.
