No Fireworks, Just Values: FG Axes Big Parties for Low-Key 65th Independence

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, announced the subdued plans at the Pre-Independence World Press Conference on Monday, stating firmly: Activities will be low-key.”

The anniversary will be anchored on the theme: “All Hands on Deck,” emphasizing collective responsibility over government spectacle. Initial activities already completed include the Jummat Prayers on Friday and a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday.

The central, high-profile event will be the unveiling of the National Value Charter, a foundational framework championed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) designed to cultivate national pride and responsible citizenship.

The Charter is essentially a new social contract, spelling out obligations for both parties:

The Nigerian Promise: Details the government’s commitment to values like equality, democracy, freedom, and meritocracy.

The Citizens’ Code: Outlines individual responsibilities, urging Nigerians to embrace discipline, tolerance, accountability, and resilience.

According to the Minister, the NOA will use extensive campaigns and the National Students’ Debate to promote these principles, ensuring the 65th anniversary is a launchpad for civic and moral renewal rather than a mere holiday.
