The family of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer, DSP Adama Adekunle Emmanuel, has cried out over his death after he was allegedly shot by a colleague while on duty in Abuja.
The incident reportedly happened last Sunday morning at a hotel in the Life Camp area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking to City & Crime, the widow of the late officer, Mrs. Titilayo Adams, alleged that there was foul play in the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.
“From his body, we could clearly see gunshot wounds on his shoulders. Nothing suggests it was an accidental fire. They want to cover up what actually happened,” she claimed.
She further alleged that her husband’s corpse was taken to Maitama General Hospital without the family’s consent.
According to her, the deceased officer, aged 45, had been attached to a politician in the Life Camp area. He left home on Sunday, August 31, with plans to return the same day but never made it back.
Mrs. Adams said the family only learnt of his death later in the afternoon when a colleague, identified as Mr. Emmanuel, informed them that the officer had “mistakenly shot himself multiple times,” a version she strongly disputed.
She expressed concern over the different accounts given to the family.
“We were told three different things — that he had an accidental discharge while fixing his rifle, that a colleague mistakenly shot him, and that he fired into the air and the bullet bounced back at him. Which one should we believe?” she asked.
The widow also lamented that the NSCDC has yet to officially brief the family.
“They told us they were coming to see us, but up till now no one has contacted us. My husband died mysteriously and we deserve to know the truth,” she said.
She appealed for justice and support for the family.
“My husband left behind his parents and two children who are supposed to resume school today. Our house rent has also expired, and I have no job to cater for the children. They should take care of his burial rites. All I want is justice for my husband.”
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the NSCDC FCT Command spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, were unsuccessful, as messages sent to her remained unanswered.
Similarly, when contacted, the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, said she would confirm the incident and provide details later.
