NUJ commends Oborevwori, calls for peace, infrastructure push

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, has commended Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for the legacy projects being executed across the state, particularly in Warri, Uvwie, and adjoining communities.

The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Chapel’s congress held on Monday at the Chief Government Ekpemupolo Press Centre, Warri. The communiqué was signed by Comrade Sir Jimitota Onoyeme (Chairman), Comrade Elo Edremoda (Secretary), Comrade Onyekachukwu Meluwa (Member), and Elder Dele Oguyemi (Member).

The congress praised Governor Oborevwori for his developmental strides, noting that his MORE Agenda was already transforming key urban areas. It, however, urged the governor to fast-track ongoing projects, especially roads and drainage construction, as the dry season approaches.

Specifically, the journalists called for the immediate reconstruction of the Udu Express Junction/ECN Road, describing it as a critical link connecting several local government areas. They also appealed for urgent repairs on the FUPRE Junction section of the East-West Road, which they said had become a nightmare for commuters.

On security, the Chapel expressed concern over the incessant kidnapping of children in Agbarho Kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area. It urged security agencies to take decisive action to curb the menace and restore public confidence in the area.

The congress also raised alarm over recurring cult clashes in Agbarho and surrounding communities. It implored law enforcement authorities to deploy intelligence-driven operations to tackle the violence before it escalates further.

Turning to peace in Warri, the Chapel appealed to the Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo, and other residents of the oil city to embrace dialogue and shun divisive actions that could plunge the city back into crisis. The journalists emphasized that peace was the foundation for meaningful development in Delta State.

The NUJ further charged reporters covering recent agitations in Warri to demonstrate objectivity and professionalism in their reportage. It cautioned against sensationalism, stressing that the media had a duty to promote harmony rather than inflame tensions.

In the same vein, the congress urged social media handlers to be responsible in their content creation. It advised them to avoid posts capable of inciting conflict among stakeholders, warning that unguarded statements online could have far-reaching consequences offline.

The communiqué concluded with a reaffirmation of the Chapel’s commitment to upholding the ethics of journalism while supporting government efforts that promote peace, security, and development in Delta State.
