The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has mourned the tragic death of Miss Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, an anchor with Arise Television, who was killed during a robbery attack at her Katampe residence in Abuja.
In a statement on Wednesday, the FCT NUJ Chairman, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, described her death as a painful and devastating loss to her family, Arise TV, and the Nigerian media industry at large.
He expressed deep sadness over the incident, which occurred on Monday, September 29, 2025, stressing that the late broadcaster was a brilliant and dedicated professional whose work touched many lives.
“Somtochukwu was a passionate and ethical journalist who stood for truth and excellence. She represented the best of a new generation of Nigerian journalists, bold and committed to service,” Oyekunle said.
The NUJ chairman also called for a forensic investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, urging security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the crime are brought to justice without delay.
According to him, the tragic killing highlights the worsening security challenges facing residents of the nation’s capital and raises urgent questions about citizens’ safety.
“The FCT NUJ Council hereby calls on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to immediately launch a thorough forensic investigation into this heinous crime,” he stated.
The council urged journalists nationwide to draw inspiration from Maduagwu’s values of integrity and service while remaining vigilant and united in the face of growing threats to the profession.
It also commiserated with her family and the management of Arise Television, offering prayers for strength and comfort during the period of grief.
“Though her life was brief, her impact was profound. May her legacy continue to inspire courage and truth in journalism,” the council added.
