DELTA: After weeks of intense political wrangling, Mudashiru Obasa has officially returned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a dramatic twist in the leadership crisis that has rocked the legislative body.

Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, regained his position on Monday following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, his immediate successor. His re-election was facilitated by a nomination from Noheem Adams, a former Majority Leader representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1.

Taking the oath of office, Obasa expressed gratitude to his colleagues and described his return as a “victory for legislative independence and due process.” He, however, did not address the allegations of misconduct that led to his removal in the first place.

The crisis in the Lagos Assembly began when more than two-thirds of the 40-member House voted to impeach Obasa over alleged misconduct and abuse of office. His removal sparked intense political drama, with Obasa rejecting the impeachment and insisting he remained the legitimate speaker.

Tensions escalated when security operatives were deployed to the Assembly complex, leading to clashes with legislative staff. Lawmakers loyal to Meranda maintained that the impeachment was final, but Obasa’s allies continued to push for his reinstatement.

A lawmaker who spoke on condition of anonymity described the past weeks as a “turbulent period that tested the unity of the House.” He added, “This resolution is necessary for the stability of our legislative process.”

With Obasa’s return, the political atmosphere in the Lagos Assembly remains uncertain, as questions linger over the unity of lawmakers and the future of legislative proceedings in the state.
