Oborevwori Rallies Delta Youths for Army Recruitment, Offers Free Transportation for Screening

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on eligible youths across the state to seize the opportunity of the ongoing Nigerian Army 89th Regular Recruit Intake as a pathway to meaningful employment, national service, and career development.

Speaking on Monday through the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, during a sensitisation visit by a delegation from the Nigerian Army Headquarters led by Brigadier General Witto Nzidee, Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, job creation, and active involvement in national development.

He revealed that enrollment statistics from 2021 to 2024 show steady progress in the number of Delta youths joining the Nigerian Army but stressed the need for the state to meet its full recruitment quota. “We will intensify awareness through the State Awareness Creation Committee on Youth Enlistment and work closely with local councils, youth groups, religious bodies, and traditional rulers,” he said.

To ease the burden on applicants, the governor announced that the state government will provide free transportation from designated points in the three senatorial districts to the screening centre in Asaba. “We are removing the barriers preventing our youths from accessing these national opportunities. No eligible Deltan will be left behind,” he added.

The Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has been directed to roll out media campaigns in partnership with relevant agencies to ensure mass participation.

Brigadier General Witto Nzidee, who led the army sensitisation team, disclosed that the initiative was part of efforts by the Army’s Chief of Administration, Major General Lawrence Fejokwu — a Deltan — to increase the state’s representation in the military. He noted that the army offers career advancement opportunities, scholarships, international training, and secure retirement plans.

“Recruitment is merit-based and transparent. With just a secondary school certificate, a candidate can begin a journey into fields like medicine, engineering, music, and more within the army,” he said.

On his part, Commander of the 63 Brigade Asaba, Brigadier-General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, warned youths against engaging in crimes such as oil theft, kidnapping, and armed robbery, urging them instead to embrace the discipline and opportunities offered by the Nigerian Army.

The sensitisation event was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, and members of the Delta State Youth Enlistment Committee. The online application portal https://recruitment.army.mil.ng is open until May 17, 2025.
