DELTA: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on public servants to uphold integrity, diligence, and commitment in their service to the state, stressing that honesty and patience remain key virtues in career growth.
The governor made the remarks on Saturday at the retirement thanksgiving of the outgoing Delta State Head of Service, Mr. Reginald Bayoko, held at the Grace and Progress Family Church in Asaba.
The event was a moment of celebration and reflection, marking the end of an era for one of Delta State’s most respected civil servants while reinforcing the call for integrity in public office.
Reflecting on Bayoko’s distinguished career, Oborevwori praised the retired bureaucrat for his unwavering dedication to duty, describing him as a role model for aspiring civil servants.
He said, “We are gathered here today to celebrate a man who has dedicated 35 years of his life to public service, almost 10 of which he spent as a permanent secretary and another 10 as Head of Service,” the governor stated.
“His journey has been one of resilience and dedication, and today, we give thanks for a fulfilling career.”
He urged civil servants to exhibit patience and avoid unethical shortcuts in their quest for career progression.
“Many people in service today want to rise quickly. They want to become permanent secretaries overnight, but they must learn to wait for their turn,” Oborevwori cautioned.
“Some even alter their records to delay retirement, refusing to create opportunities for younger ones. This is not the right path.”
The thanksgiving service was attended by top government officials, including Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor.
Delivering a sermon titled ‘Don’t Forget’, Bishop Chuka Agwuegbo admonished public office holders to always remember that their successes are by God’s mercy. He warned against ingratitude, stating that history has shown that those who forget their humble beginnings often face disastrous ends.
In his remarks, Bayoko expressed gratitude to God for a successful career and extended appreciation to Governor Oborevwori and past governors for the opportunities he received to serve in various capacities.
“It has been an honour to serve Delta State, and I am grateful for the trust reposed in me over the years.
“Public service is about dedication, and I hope that those still in the system will continue to work with sincerity and commitment.”
