WARRI, NIGERIA — In a major boost to healthcare in the Niger Delta, the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, has commissioned the Renewed Hope Mother and Child Specialist Hospital in Ugbuwangue, Delta State. The 80-bed facility, built by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), was handed over to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba for management.

The commissioning was a highlight of the Olu’s week-long coronation anniversary celebrations. Warri South Local Government Chairman, Comrade Agbateyiniro Weyinmi Isaac, praised the project as a direct reflection of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to reduce maternal and child mortality. He pledged local authorities’ full support for the hospital’s continued growth.

A Step Towards SDG 3 and Community Impact
Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, noted that the hospital is a significant step toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which focuses on good health and well-being. She acknowledged the crucial cooperation of the Delta State Government and the Olu of Warri for providing the land. The hospital is equipped with modern medical amenities, including operating theaters, recovery rooms, and diagnostic equipment.

Dr. Mary Alile Idele, Chairman of FMC Asaba’s Board, stated that the facility has the capacity to serve approximately 25,000 patients annually, which will alleviate the financial burden on families who previously had to travel long distances for care. The hospital has already created over 150 healthcare jobs, with additional employment opportunities expected through local supply chains. The ceremony concluded with calls for further investments in solar power, diagnostic tools, and ambulance services to ensure the hospital’s long-term sustainability.
