One Killed, Six Injured In Lagos Road Crash — LASTMA

By Peter Onyekachukwu, Lagos

One person has been confirmed dead while six others sustained serious injuries in a ghastly accident at Ogolonto, Ikorodu area of Lagos on Sunday.

The accident occurred at Majidun, inward Ogolonto, opposite MRS Filling Station, leaving the vehicles involved badly damaged.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and the injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals, while one of the passengers was confirmed dead.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the crash involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EPE 494 XM and a stationary tipper truck.

He said preliminary investigation indicated that the commercial bus, which was reportedly chartered for a trip to Ogijo, suffered brake failure. The driver, allegedly speeding, lost control and rammed into the parked tipper.

“The brutal impact resulted in the instantaneous death of an adult female passenger, while five female occupants and one male sustained life-threatening injuries,” he said.

According to him, the injured victims were taken to Benic Special Hospital while the remains of the deceased were moved to the General Hospital, Ikorodu.

Bakare-Oki said LASTMA officials arrested both drivers after the tipper driver attempted to flee. They have been handed over to the Ipakodo Police Division for investigation.

He added that operatives cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow.

The LASTMA boss advised motorists to avoid excessive speeding, noting that it undermines a driver’s ability to respond to emergencies and may lead to fatal outcomes.
