There was tension in Rano town, Kano State, on Monday after angry youths set ablaze the divisional police headquarters following the death of a young man allegedly in police custody.
The incident, which occurred on May 26, 2025, prompted the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, to lead an emergency visit to the affected station for an on-the-spot assessment. He was accompanied by the Chairman of Rano Local Government Area, Hon. Mallam Mohammed Naziru Ya’u.
The situation escalated after news filtered through the community that a young man had died in the custody of the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters. Enraged by the incident, scores of youths stormed the station in protest, torching parts of the facility.
During the visit, CP Bakori and the council chairman inspected the extent of the damage and held a brief interaction with officers at the scene. The command also released images showing the destruction caused by the mob action.
Speaking on behalf of the command, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the tragic incident and the attack that followed. He said the command has launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances that led to the suspect’s death.
“We understand the anger and frustration of the community, but we urge residents to remain calm and allow the law to take its course,” Kiyawa said. “We are working with local leaders to restore peace and ensure that justice is served.”
He also noted that efforts are underway to rebuild trust between the police and the community, while emphasizing the need for constructive engagement instead of violence.
As of Monday evening, security presence in the area had been increased to prevent further breakdown of law and order, while the police continue to appeal for calm and cooperation from residents.
