Oyo Govt Reacts to Student’s Death by Stray Bullet, Clarifies Incident Was During Traffic Enforcement

Following the tragic death of a student hit by a stray bullet in Ibadan while heading to sit for the WASSCE, the Oyo State Government has officially responded, clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued by Governor Seyi Makinde’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the government explained that the student was in a vehicle driven by his father, who was allegedly driving against traffic along Alakia Road when police attempted to stop them. During the operation, a police officer reportedly aimed at the car’s tire, but the bullet struck the student instead. He was later confirmed dead at the hospital.

The government dismissed earlier reports suggesting the police were chasing suspected internet fraudsters, stating the operation was a routine joint enforcement by OYRTMA and the police following public complaints about frequent one-way violations on the route.

Reacting to the public outcry, the government expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and assured that the officer responsible is under investigation by the state police command.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned the incident, describing it as “reckless and senseless.” NANS called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the officer, alongside compensation for the victim’s family.

The tragedy has sparked widespread anger, with youths staging protests and calling for accountability as investigations continue.
