A quiet night in Jos turned chaotic when a trailer lost control and rammed into a residential building along Bauchi Road in Jos North Local Government Area, leaving three people seriously injured and sparking fears among residents.
The accident, which occurred around 11 p.m., involved the trailer driver and two of his assistants who were in transit to Bauchi. According to eyewitnesses, the crash happened after one of the vehicle’s front tyres burst, causing the driver to veer off the road and slam into the house.
The impact was so severe that the head of the truck became lodged deep into the building, trapping the victims inside and prompting a frantic rescue operation by residents. Hundreds of concerned neighbours rushed to the scene, using makeshift tools and sheer determination to free those trapped.
“It took us nearly an hour to pull them out,” said Mahmuda Ibrahim, who witnessed the incident. “The driver was in terrible shape because the front part of the vehicle was badly crushed against the building. It was a struggle, but we thank God they survived.”
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived soon after and joined the rescue effort. The FRSC spokesperson in Plateau State, Peter Yakubu Longsang, confirmed the incident and stated that the truck has been cleared from the scene. “We deployed our heavy-duty equipment and successfully removed the trailer. Normal traffic has since resumed,” he said.
All three injured persons were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, though their current condition has not been officially disclosed.
The incident has reignited concerns over road safety and the state of heavy-duty vehicles plying Nigeria’s highways, particularly in residential and densely populated areas. Citizens and community leaders are once again calling on government agencies to intensify vehicle inspection routines and enforce stricter safety measures to prevent avoidable tragedies.
As one resident put it, “We could have been burying people today. We need to take the issue of road safety more seriously. A house is no longer safe if trailers can crash into people’s homes in the middle of the night.”
