Parents Assault Chemistry Teacher Over Discipline in Delta School

DELTA: A Chemistry teacher at Uduere Secondary School, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, was attacked on Friday by parents and community members allegedly angered by her disciplinary action against a student.

The teacher, popularly known as Aunty Ruth, had reportedly disciplined a student involved in a scuffle by administering six strokes of the cane on Thursday. The student, however, allegedly reignited the conflict with her classmate after school hours.

Eyewitnesses said the student’s mother, accompanied by others, stormed the school early Friday morning and confronted the teacher as she arrived.

“Aunty Ruth was barely out of her vehicle when the woman and some community members pounced on her. It took the intervention of other teachers to save her,” a source recounted.

Local government officials, led by Ughelli North Chairman Olorogun Jaro Egbo, and the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Austin Ovuevuraye, intervened to restore calm.

A teacher at the school, speaking anonymously, lamented the recurring attacks on educators. “This isn’t the first time. In February, a student got the principal arrested for disciplining them, and the case ended with the principal apologizing to the student. It’s heartbreaking how educators are treated these days.”

Efforts to get a comment from NUT Chairman Ovuevuraye were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls at the time of filing this report.
