The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership of plotting to stop Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming her legislative duties after serving a six-month suspension.
In a statement on Tuesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, condemned the reported move by the Clerk of the National Assembly to bar the Kogi Central lawmaker from returning to the Senate.
According to the opposition party, the action amounts to a deliberate attempt to deny the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District their constitutional right to representation.
“This calculated plot by the Akpabio-led APC Senate leadership is provocative, undemocratic, and a clear danger to national stability,” the PDP said.
The party further alleged that the development fits into what it described as “APC’s broader agenda to suffocate the opposition and stifle dissenting voices,” while also linking it to “a pattern of harassment and intimidation of women in politics.”
PDP insisted that Akpoti-Uduaghan had already served the controversial suspension, which it described as “illegal and unjust,” and should therefore be allowed to resume without further obstruction.
It cautioned the Clerk of the National Assembly against being “politically entangled” and urged him to remain neutral in line with his role as a civil servant.
The PDP also called on the international community, democracy watchdogs, and human rights groups to speak out against what it termed “a renewed attack” on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The party concluded by charging the senator to ignore the reported letter and prepare to return to the Red Chamber, while demanding that the Senate leadership guarantee her unhindered resumption.
