Peter Obi Condemns Killing of Security Operatives in Benue

ABUJA – Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has condemned the recent ambush and killing of security personnel in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. In a statement on Tuesday, Obi lamented the frequency of such tragedies and called on the government to address the root causes of insecurity.

The attack, which occurred at Agu Centre, Mbatyula/Mberev Council Ward, reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 16 security operatives, with several others still missing or injured. The assailants, suspected to be armed herdsmen and local militia gangs, also set fire to the trucks the operatives were in and stole motorcycles.

In a post on his X handle, Obi emphasized that the recurring attacks on men and women in uniform should serve as a wake-up call for leaders to “better equip and motivate our security operatives.” He stressed that security must now be the “foundation of governance.”

Obi also called for fair compensation and welfare support for the families of the slain operatives, stating that it is the least a “grateful nation can provide.” He added, “It is not charity, it is justice for those who laid down their lives so the rest of us can live.”

The former presidential candidate paid tribute to the victims, stating that their “sacrifice and patriotism will never be forgotten.” He also offered his condolences to the families, assuring them that they are not alone. Sources
