KOGI: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a development that could trigger a referendum in line with Nigeria’s electoral laws.
The petition was submitted on Monday and was received by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary to the Commission. While the details of the petition remain undisclosed, political observers believe the move may be linked to ongoing political realignments and grievances within Kogi State.
A political analyst, Dr. Felix Okonkwo, described the petition as “a significant test of Nigeria’s democratic process,” noting that recall efforts are rare and require extensive support from constituents.
“This is not a simple process. The law requires a significant percentage of registered voters in the senator’s district to endorse the petition before INEC can proceed to a referendum. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds,” Okonkwo stated.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has yet to officially respond to the development. However, her supporters have dismissed the petition as a politically motivated attempt to undermine her mandate.
INEC is expected to verify the signatures attached to the petition before determining the next steps in the recall process.
