Amaju Pinnick Back in FIFA’s Power Corridors Despite Council Loss

ABUJA—Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Pinnick has cemented his return to the global power structure of football, securing a key appointment within FIFA just months after narrowly losing his seat on the influential FIFA Council.

Pinnick has been named the Deputy Chairperson of the FIFA Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee, an influential role that grants him a direct voice in shaping the world’s biggest tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

The appointment underscores Pinnick’s enduring influence and strong reputation within global football’s decision-making circles, despite his setback in the CAF elections earlier this year.

The Competitions Committee, which oversees the format, qualification, and rules for all major FIFA men’s tournaments, is crucial for African football. Pinnick’s inclusion is viewed by observers as a strategic move that guarantees the continent a powerful advocate in core policy discussions.

An official statement noted that Pinnick, who also recently became an adviser to CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, is known for his diplomacy and advocacy for African interests. His position is expected to influence decisions on tournament hosting rights and continental representation quotas.

Pinnick had served as the NFF President from 2014 to 2022 and previously held a seat on the FIFA Council, which he lost in March 2025 by a single vote. His return to a high-ranking committee confirms that the Nigerian administrator remains a significant figure in the governance of the beautiful game.
