Nigerians have been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of the Plateau State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Fr. Dr. Polycarp Lubo.
The revered cleric reportedly passed away in the early hours of Sunday, June 15, 2025. While the cause of his death has not been officially disclosed, his passing has been confirmed by the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, where he served as a prominent priest.
In a formal statement issued by the Archdiocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Daniel Gyang, the church described Fr. Lubo’s death as a painful loss, but accepted it with faith.
“On a sad note but with total submission to the will of God, we hereby announce the passing unto eternal glory of Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Polycarp Lubo, who passed on in the wee hours of Sunday,” Gyang said.
The Archbishop of Jos expressed condolences to the late priest’s immediate family, the Plateau CAN community, the presbyterium of Jos, parishioners of St. William’s Parish Zawan where he served as Parish Priest and Dean, and the broader Catholic faithful in the Archdiocese.
Fr. Lubo was known for his passionate service to the Christian community in Plateau State and his role in promoting peace and unity across religious and ethnic divides.
“May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen,” the statement concluded.
Fr. Lubo’s death marks a significant loss for the Christian body in Nigeria, especially at a time when his leadership and voice were needed in navigating complex interfaith issues in the Middle Belt region.
