The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a cybercrime training facility, commonly referred to as a “Yahoo School,” operating in the Iju area of Lagos. The discovery has led to the arrest of four alleged fraud masterminds and six trainees, including a 12-year-old boy.
Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin revealed that the facility’s operators lured young individuals, mostly from Anambra State, and trained them in internet fraud techniques. He stated that the proceeds from the fraudulent activities were controlled by the trainers, leaving the trainees with little to no financial gain.
“These criminals are not only defrauding unsuspecting victims but are also indoctrinating young minds into cybercrime. One of the suspects, a 12-year-old, was reportedly abused and coerced into the act. He is currently receiving medical care and will be placed in protective custody until his family is identified,” Hundeyin said.
He further disclosed that all suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yaba for further investigation and prosecution. The police have also launched a manhunt for the owner of the facility and other sponsors who financed the training scheme.
“The Lagos State Police Command is committed to dismantling such criminal networks. We urge the owner of this facility to surrender himself immediately at SCID Panti or risk being declared wanted,” Hundeyin added.
Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh commended officers for their efforts in uncovering the operation, emphasizing that the command will intensify its crackdown on cybercrime and other illegal activities.
“The fight against cybercrime requires collaboration from all stakeholders. Parents must be vigilant about their children’s activities, and the public should report any suspicious movements to law enforcement agencies,” Jimoh stated.
The police also urged individuals who have fallen victim to internet fraud linked to the arrested suspects to come forward with complaints at SCID Yaba to aid the ongoing investigation.
