By Peter Onyekachukwu
In a renewed crackdown on violent crime and cultism, the Delta State Police Command has arrested four suspected cultists and recovered a Beretta pistol with live ammunition, alongside a Lexus RX 330 Jeep stolen during a robbery in Warri.
The arrest, which took place on June 29, was executed by the CP Special Assignment Team led by ASP Julius Robinson, following credible intelligence. The operatives raided Yoruba Street in Sapele and apprehended 31-year-old Rasheed Atanda, originally from Irinle in Kwara State. Further investigation led to the arrest of three other suspects: Charles Oyowe, 36, from Obeda in Warri North; Rewane Ogbitse, 49, from Jakpa in Warri South; and Shedrack Oloko, 44, from Ethiope East. A loaded Beretta pistol was found in Oyowe’s possession.
All four suspects confessed to being members of the Eiye confraternity, a cult group linked to violent crimes across the state. Police authorities say they are still interrogating the suspects and further investigations are ongoing.
In a separate operation on June 30, the same police team recovered a Lexus RX 330 Jeep at UTI Road, near DSC Expressway in Ebrumede. The vehicle had been reported stolen during a violent armed robbery in which the assailants, wielding dangerous weapons, invaded a home and escaped with valuable jewelry, phones, and the vehicle registered as RBC 656 CN.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, praised the officers involved for their prompt action and effective use of intelligence. He stressed the importance of public cooperation in combating crime.
“The success of these operations is a direct result of timely information from the public and effective policing. We urge communities to continue working with the police and report any suspicious activity,” CP Olufemi said.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and vowed that the manhunt for other fleeing suspects involved in the robbery would continue until justice is served.
