Police Deny Torture Allegations, Confirm Criminal Charges Against Sowore

By Peter Onyenkachukwu

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says human rights activist and 2023 African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, will face criminal charges in court.

In a statement on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that Sowore’s arrest followed “credible and corroborated allegations” including forgery, cyberstalking, and other offences under investigation.

Adejobi stressed that the arrest was lawful and conducted in strict compliance with constitutional procedures and Sowore’s rights.

Reacting to viral photos showing Sowore with a bandaged arm, the police dismissed claims he was tortured in custody, insisting the bandage was among his personal belongings before arrest.

“To be clear, Mr. Sowore was released on bail well within the 48-hour constitutional window, as required under Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He is fully aware of the nature of the allegations against him and is expected to appear before a competent court in the coming days,” Adejobi said.

The Force also revealed that Sowore was offered medical examinations on August 7 and 8 by the Medical Director of Muhammadu Buhari Police Hospital and the Force Medical Officer, but declined both.

“The record must show that the opportunity for independent medical verification was twice provided and twice rejected,” Adejobi added.

According to the police, Sowore’s temporary detention was backed by a valid court order. The NPF cautioned civil society organisations and media outlets against what it termed the “sensationalisation” of the case.

Reaffirming its position, the Force said, “The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding human rights, the rule of law, and justice. No individual — regardless of status, influence, or social media presence is above the law.”
