The Kano State Police Command has scored a major breakthrough in its fight against organized vehicle theft, arresting six suspects and recovering four stolen vehicles linked to two notorious armed robbery syndicates.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed that the arrests followed a series of coordinated operations by the police tactical team in Kano and beyond.
In one of the operations, Kiyawa said a special team led by CSP Rabiu Gidado apprehended a suspect, Saidu Abubakar, on May 10, 2025, in Plateau State. Abubakar was found with a stolen 2016 Toyota Corolla, allegedly taken from a resident of Naibawa Quarters in Kano.
“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to being part of a syndicate that specializes in stealing and snatching vehicles across different states,” Kiyawa said.
In another operation on May 16, police detectives in Kano arrested another suspect, Ibrahim Isa, who was caught while trying to sell a stolen Howo concrete mixer. Investigations later revealed that the heavy-duty vehicle had been stolen earlier the same day in Kazaure Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
All six suspects are currently in custody and are assisting the police with further investigations.
“They will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded,” Kiyawa added, assuring residents of Kano that the command remains committed to ridding the state of criminal elements.
The recent arrests highlight the growing coordination among vehicle theft syndicates operating across state lines, but also reflect the increasing determination of law enforcement agencies to track and apprehend such criminals.
