Police Dismiss ‘Church Arrest’ Claims as 33 Face Court Over Asaba New Year’s Eve Violence

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The Delta State Police Command has dismissed claims circulating online that a suspect was arrested during a church service, as it confirmed the arraignment of 33 persons over alleged violent disturbances and public nuisance during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Asaba.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspects were arrested at different locations across the state capital during coordinated security operations aimed at preventing criminal activities and maintaining public order during the festivities.

According to him, preliminary investigations established prima facie cases against the 33 suspects, leading to their arraignment before Magistrate Court 1, Asaba.

Edafe disclosed that three of the accused persons were remanded in custody, while the remaining suspects were granted bail pending the continuation of prosecution.

Clarifying reports by some online platforms, the police spokesman explained that the individual allegedly arrested in church was actually apprehended alongside two others inside a Mercedes Benz GLK vehicle parked opposite Pinnacle Hotel, Asaba.

He said the suspects were allegedly attempting to purchase illicit drugs from a suspected dealer when they were arrested, adding that incriminating exhibits were recovered at the scene.

Edafe further revealed that one of the suspects, a personnel of a sister security agency, was granted bail and released to his organisation, noting that his appearance in court could be guaranteed through official channels.

He stressed that the grant of bail does not amount to the termination of investigations or an indication of innocence, as prosecution is ongoing.

The Delta State Police Command urged the public to disregard misleading and sensational reports capable of undermining lawful police operations, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the rule of law in the maintenance of public peace.
