Police Suspend Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permits After Court Order

By PPeter Onyekachukwu

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of vehicle tinted glass permits in compliance with a court order halting the exercise.

The suspension was confirmed by the Spokesperson of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, on Wednesday, October 8.

Last week, the Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, ordered the police and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to stop the enforcement of the policy across the country.

The court, in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025 filed by John Aikpokpo-Martins against the IGP and the police, directed the parties to maintain the status quo and respect judicial processes pending further proceedings in the matter.

Speaking on an AIT programme monitored by The Nation, Adeh explained that the suspension followed the formal receipt of the court order by the police authorities.

“We are waiting for the verdict. We are not against the courts, and we will continue to wait until we get a verdict,” she stated.

The police spokesperson also addressed public concerns about the relevance of the tinted glass policy, stressing that it was primarily a security measure.

According to her, the regulation was introduced to curb crimes often carried out with vehicles that had darkened windows, which made it difficult for security operatives to track suspects.

“The law was not made by us. We are enforcers. The policy was purely security-driven. Some criminals were using tinted vehicles to commit offences, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify suspects,” Adeh explained.

She further dismissed speculations that the policy was designed for revenue purposes.

“All payments related to tinted permits are made directly into the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA), not to the police,” she clarified.
