The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide with effect from January 2, 2026.
The Force said the decision followed a review of prevailing security concerns and the increasing use of vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass for criminal activities.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police clarified that there was no court order restraining the NPF from enforcing existing laws regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles.
According to the statement, enforcement was previously suspended in the interest of transparency and public convenience to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documents and complete the permit application process without pressure.
However, the Police noted that recent security trends have revealed a surge in crimes committed with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
The Force said criminal elements have exploited the suspension to conceal their identities and perpetrate offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
“In view of this development, the Nigeria Police Force has found it necessary and urgent to resume enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit as a proactive measure to safeguard lives and property,” the statement said.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured members of the public that the renewed enforcement would be carried out professionally and in strict compliance with the law.
He also pledged that officers would respect the rights of citizens while carrying out their duties and reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety and the rule of law.
The Police further urged motorists who require tinted glass permits to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with all legal requirements.
The statement was issued from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, and dated December 15, 2025.
