JUST IN: Political Crisis Returns to Rivers as Assembly Revives Fubara Impeachment

By Peter Onyekachukwu, Port Harcourt

Barely months after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened in the Rivers State political crisis, the State House of Assembly has revived impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The renewed move comes after the lawmakers reconvened on Thursday from the Christmas recess, marking a fresh twist in the prolonged power tussle in the oil-rich state.

At plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, presented a notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Governor Fubara. He disclosed that 26 members of the Assembly endorsed the impeachment notice, citing alleged violations of the Nigerian Constitution.

Amaewhule announced that the notice would be formally served on the governor within seven days, in line with constitutional provisions.

In a similar development, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read out the notice of allegations and gross misconduct against the deputy governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The latest action by the Assembly signals a resurgence of political tension in Rivers State, raising concerns over governance stability and the possibility of another major showdown between the executive and legislature.

This is the second time the Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy.

It will be recalled that in February 2025, President Tinubu stepped in to halt a previous impeachment attempt by declaring a state of emergency in the state, which resulted in the removal of the governor and his deputy, as well as the suspension of the State House of Assembly.
