PSC Appoints Agbonika as Edo State Commissioner of Police, Tasks Him with Restoring Order

Benin City, April 3, 2025

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of Monday Agbonika as the new Commissioner of Police for Edo State. Agbonika, who was formerly with the Police Mounted Troop, replaces CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin.

The appointment was finalized following a posting interview at the Police Service Commission, presided over by DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), along with Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (Rtd), representing the judiciary, and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.

The PSC has tasked Agbonika with proactively addressing security concerns in Edo State, particularly in the wake of recent violent incidents. He has been directed to ensure that reprisals stemming from the killings are prevented and that the crime rate in the state is significantly reduced.

During the meeting, Agbonika was reminded that his handling of the suspects arrested in connection with the recent killings would be a key determinant of his success in the state. The Commission urged him to work closely with community stakeholders, maintain transparency, and keep relevant authorities informed of all actions taken.

Furthermore, the new Commissioner was advised against sidelining key police departments in favor of tactical units. He pledged to uphold the law in his duties and rely on the Inspector General of Police for guidance.

Agbonika brings over 32 years of policing experience, covering operations, investigations, administration, public information, and divisional police management. Prior to his new posting, he served as Commissioner of Police, Mounted Troop, and Force Equitation Officer at Force Headquarters. His extensive career includes previous roles as Commissioner of Police Communications (Operations), Deputy Commissioner Interpol at the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Lagos, and Deputy Commissioner of Operations at the Ports Authority Police Command in Port Harcourt.
