The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a serving police corporal and a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) undergraduate for alleged involvement in cult activities.
The officer, identified as Corporal Onwukwe Godswill of the Elimgbu Division, was arrested alongside a 200-level Biomedical Technology student, Ifeanyi Israel, during a sign-out party on campus.
Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit (ACU) responded after UNIPORT’s internal security team intercepted the suspects while anticipating a clash with rival cultists.
A search on them reportedly yielded two locally made pistols, four live cartridges, two rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a small axe.
Further searches at Corporal Godswill’s residence uncovered another locally made pistol and two machetes.
The suspects are now in custody as investigations continue into their alleged involvement in cult clashes and wider criminal networks.
SP Iringe-Koko reaffirmed that the Command is determined to root out cultism and violent crime across the state.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, warned that there would be no hiding place for lawbreakers, regardless of status.
He urged residents to report suspicious movements promptly to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation is vital to curbing crime.
